What is citizen science?

We monitor the biodiversity across the Bore Place estate throughout the year, and we are looking for volunteers to help. Citizen science is when the public contributes to scientific research - you could be a species expert, or just someone with an interest.

Learn to survey for breeding birds at this FREE training session, in a friendly and relaxed group setting. Join our citizen science programme and contribute meaningful data to our conservation work.

Calling all bird enthusiasts 📣🐦

We are looking for volunteers to carry out breeding bird surveys here at Bore Place as part of our Citizen Science programme! Could you volunteer one morning (approx. 2.5hrs) a month between March and July, to undertake bird surveys for us?

No previous experience is needed - just binoculars, a bird ID book, and a fondness for our feathered friends!

Why are we surveying birds?

Birds are a good indicator of overall biodiversity as their populations respond quickly to variation in habitat quality. Breeding bird surveys are a monitoring method used to assess trends, populations, and distribution patterns of different species. Undertaking surveys is an excellent way to familiarise yourself with the bird species in your local area, and learn how to recognise them by sight, and by their calls. Breeding bird survey experience is also an asset to any aspiring ecologist's skill set - so come and join us to learn and practise this valuable skill for FREE.

To volunteer for these surveys:

  • You need to be able to commit one morning per month (approx. 2.5hrs) during the survey season, which is March - July.
  • You must attend this training session with Bore Place's Citizen Science and Nature Officer, Jane Whittington. During the session, you will accompany Jane to undertake a breeding birds survey, learning the methodology along the way.
  • You need a moderate level of fitness to cover the bird survey transect route (approx 5km). You'll be given a map to follow the same transect when you undertake the surveys independently.
  • You can pick your own survey dates (one per month) and get counting! You're welcome to bring a friend to undertake the survey together, or just for walking company.

Important info

  • You must be 18+ to attend this training session and volunteer for these surveys.
  • Dress for the weather and in clothes you don't mind getting mucky - this is a practical training session and will be outside.
  • Wear sturdy, comfortable boots or wellies.
  • Please bring binoculars and a bird book.
  • Feel free to bring water and snacks with you.
  • Sorry, NO DOGS are permitted with the exception of service animals.

This event is part of our People and Nature Together project, made possible with The National Lottery Heritage Fund, and thanks to National Lottery players.
