Come and watch a bird ringing session at Bough Beech reservoir. This session is open to all but numbers must be limited, so please pre-book on this page.
Why ring birds?
Ringing birds has been a practice in Britain and Ireland for over 100 years. It has enabled us to discover new information about bird migration routes and wintering areas, and the main focus of The Ringing Scheme today is to monitor bird populations. Ringing allows us to study how many young birds leave the nest and survive to become adults, as well as how many adults survive the stresses of breeding, migration, and severe weather. Changes in survival rates and other aspects of birds’ biology help us to understand the causes of population declines.
This information is important for conservation and the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO) holds data gathered. The BTO is also responsible for training ringers, ensuring that best practice is observed and that the welfare of the bird is paramount. Please note that only the trained volunteers will handle the birds.
Important info
- This event is at Bough Beech nature reserve. You will be sent the location of the car parking area on your reminder email - please keep an eye out for your email a few days before.
- The event is weather dependent. We will email you by 4pm on Friday 16 August if it is not able to go ahead.
- Suitable for all - no knowledge or experience necessary.
- Feel free to bring a flask/snacks!
- Sorry no dogs, except service animals.
